Ahh, the joys of roughing it in the great outdoors - champagne, high thread-count sheets, flat-screen television. Camping, New York City-style. At least a couple of city locales are offering this unusual option - the chance to sleep outdoors, incredibly comfortably. It's an urban take on "glamping," where hotel comforts are taken outside. "It's basically being able to sleep under the stars in a luxury setting," said Jeffrey Poirot, general manager at AKA Central Park, which offers an outdoor bedroom on its 1,000-square-foot terrace outside its 17th-floor penthouse. For about $2,000 per night, the offering includes a bedroom setup - queen bed, fireplace, television - but also a telescope to look at the stars and the ingredients for that campfire favorite, s'mores.

AKA has been offering the option for the past few years, Poirot said. It's a popular option in the summer months, and has been booked more than half a dozen times this year, he said. The idea of glamping (glamorous + camping, get it?) is a relatively recent arrival in the United States over the last decade or so but has been popular in other parts of the world, like Africa, where wealthy visitors wanted to travel but always in comfort. There are websites dedicated to it, showcasing luxury camping sites in some of the world's most beautiful natural environments. On a recent night, Anita Waxman and Tom Dokton made a go of a night on the terrace. The couple, who live in San Francisco but spend time in New York City frequently in their roles producing musical theater, eagerly made use of the fire to roast some marshmallows. "That's what camping is all about," Waxman said, who admitted that in previous camping forays with friends, she would stay for dinner, then return to her home or a hotel.

"This is exactly what I want," Waxman said, and Dokton agreed. "The access to the city, being in the middle of the city and having this kind of atmosphere, it's fantastic," he said. They had engaged in luxury camping during their travels internationally, but were thrilled to have the chance to do it in New York. And they still felt a sense of solitude, even in a city of millions. "There's a sense of privacy up here, too," Dokton said. At the Affinia Gardens hotel on the Upper East Side, guests who book the patio suite (starting at around $300 per night) can pick from a range of options from dinner outside to a bed made up on the patio floor in an actual tent. General Manager Steve Sasso said the offerings had been in place for a few years, with around 10 percent to 20 percent of those booking the suite choosing from the outdoor options. "Today's travelers are really looking for unique experiences," he said.

They're guests like Kathleen Boyle, of Queens. She and her husband booked the room to celebrate their anniversary, and decided to sleep in the tent. "We thought that would be really cool and different," she said. Having the ability to sleep outside but have access to the hotel room made a difference, Boyle said. "The safety of being able to go back inside, not having to pee in the woods, here's a nice bathroom, that was excellent," she said.

Summer is here and now is the perfect time to take advantage of some amazing vacation destinations that are discounted for military service members and their families. We update and publish this list each year as a reminder that there are some great opportunities for you and your family to get away from it all and yet not deplete your savings account.

Maybe this is the year you visit a new state or even venture outside of the United States and visit some gorgeous destinations in Europe or Asia. Hopefully this list will spark an interest in a vacation destination you had not previously considered.

If you are simply looking for inexpensive billeting along your PCS route or at a desirable location close to home, it is always a great idea to look into military lodging and an easy resource for all of your billeting needs is PCS-Lodging.com. Created by the owner’s of MilitaryByOwner.com, this site makes it easy to find affordable billeting throughout the United States.

Another great resource is Military Living’s "Military Travel Guide U.S.A." reference guide. You can pick one up at your local exchange or you can order it on-line. For just over $30, this book can be an invaluable tool. This guide will provide you with all of the information and contacts you need to enjoy military lodging, RV and camping and Space A travel.

While the guide may help you consider something new, there are of course, the desired vacation destinations that create visions of relaxation and adventure.

The number one vacation destination for families is Walt Disney World in Florida. What a fantastic place to spend time with our family, and even better if it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg.  The military has a facility on the park grounds called the Shades of Green.

This beautiful resort is situated in the heart of the Magic Kingdom and includes free transportation to all of the Disney resorts. It is surrounded by two championship golf courses, includes access to two pools, a fitness center and has dining, shopping and laundry facilities. They also have discount tickets available for purchase for most Orlando area attractions. If the resort is full on your desired days of travel, they will try and put you up in a nearby facility for the same rate. This is a deal that is hard to beat.

Be sure if you are visiting a Walt Disney Parks to check with the ITT office at your military installation to purchase discount tickets. If you forget to purchase them ahead of time, be sure to ask at the ticket window for their discounted military rates.

While in Florida, you may also want to consider the idea of visiting the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, as there is so much to see and explore at the Space Center. You can find discount tickets to the Space Center at your local MWR office. Check into reservations at The Space Coast Inn on Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach. With low nightly rates, this trip won't break the bank.

With the rich history in Williamsburg, VA there is so much culture to be enjoyed and shared with your family. Plus you are just minutes away from Water Country USA and Busch Gardens.  Both of these parks are fantastic and they offer a free one-day pass to military members and up to three free passes for direct family members as part of their Waves of Honor program.

Take advantage of the great recreational facilities aboard the Cheatham Annex in Williamsburg, VA. (757-887-4601) They offer recreational cabins and camping spaces as well the opportunity to take part in various recreational activities.

If a relaxing vacation seaside is more your idea of fun, then maybe the Cape Henry Inn on Fort Story is the perfect location. As one of the Armed Forces Recreation Center Resorts, this facility provides an affordable seaside vacation for all military members and their families. Choose from hotel rooms, cottages, bungalows, and even log cabins, all with spectacular views and access to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Cottages at Dam Neck in Virginia Beach also offers the opportunity to enjoy the balmy Virginia summer on the Atlantic coast. They offer two and three bedroom oceanfront cottages for weekly rental during the peak summer months at very affordable prices.

While you are in the Virginia area, maybe you should venture north for a visit to our Nation's Capital. Only about 3-4 hours from the Virginia Beach/Williamsburg area, you will find more to do in DC then you have time to do it. With most of the attractions being free, it can be an affordable vacation for the family. With the numerous military installations in the DC, Virginia and Maryland area, you should also have no problem finding nice, affordable lodging.  A good place to start is with Bolling Air Force Base in DC or Ft. Belvoir in Virginia.

Ah yes, Hawaii, a wonderful tropical destination which can cost you an arm and a leg to enjoy. However, again there are some great facilities to take advantage of that can make even this resort destination affordable. Another facility that is a member of the Armed Forces Recreation Center Resorts is the Hale Koa, located right on the beach at Waikiki, Oahu. The mission statement of the Hale Koa is, "to operate a first class hotel and recreation facility at affordable prices for military members and their families." Almost sounds too good to be true but I can attest that it is everything it claims to be!

While there may be affordable lodging on Hawaii, I know you are thinking about the expense to get there. Well, this is where the real adventure comes in. You could consider the idea of Space A flight travel. Yes, taking a MAC flight! While this can be risky because you are essentially flying standby, it can also be the cheapest way you will ever get from one destination to another. You have to carefully consider this option but if you are able to adjust your travel dates on either end of your trip, this could be the perfect solution. There are quite a few websites that offer advice and support for Space A travel, so performing an Internet search is a great place to start. When our family traveled Space A to Europe, we found this Space A site to be very useful.

You can get great deals on either end of California, but let's start down south in San Diego. Once again, you have Sea World there, so you can take advantage of their Waves of Honor offer and enjoy a day with Shamoo. With the gorgeous beaches, fabulous restaurants and numerous entertainment options, San Diego is an all-inclusive destination. There are several bases in the San Diego area that offer lodging. Take a look at the Navy Lodge North Island NAS or the Navy Lodge San Diego Naval Base.

Camp Pendleton is another fabulous resource for great billeting! The base offers two different beach cottages for rent, which have direct beach access and incredible ocean views. They also have a large number of full service RV beachfront campsites at both locations. This is a summer treat that is hard to beat!

If your travels take you to Northern California, be sure to look into the Marines' Memorial Club. This is not considered a "military lodging" facility, but rather a club/hotel exclusively for uniformed services personnel, active duty and retirees and their guests. This club/hotel is a living memorial to Marines who lost their lives in the Pacific during WWII. With rates a bit higher than the other facilities mentioned, it is still considerably less than what you will find for other hotels in the area. It is right in the heart of San Francisco with easy access to cable cars and other area attractions and it is an absolutely stunning hotel.

Let’s take this opportunity to venture far from home and bask in the beauty of the Bavarian Alps in Germany. The Edelweiss resort offers high-adventure in one of the premier sporting areas in Germany. They offer spacious guest rooms and cozy log cabins nestled in amongst the picturesque Alps with access to wellness clubs, pools, spas, dining, and guided tours. This is an amazing place to visit year-round!

If Asia appeals to you, then the Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul, South Korea is the perfect destination. Located in the heart of Seoul, you will be able to explore the rich and diverse culture that is South Korea. Visit museums, art exhibits, teahouses, landmarks and more. The resort offers beautiful rooms, access to health club, pool, dining, and lounges.

With the number of airlines charging fees for checked baggage, it is beneficial to check the various airlines ahead of time to see if they offer to waive the fees for active duty military and/or their dependents. These fees certainly can add to the bottom line of vacation expenses, so choosing an airline that does not charge extra fees can free up money for other items.

If your plans do not take you far from home this summer, be sure to check with your local ITT/MWR office for discounted tickets to attractions in your area. As a general rule of thumb, try presenting your military ID when checking out at stores and restaurants, or just ask if various places offer military discounts. You might just be surprised how many places will give you 10% off of your purchases.

Wherever your travels take you and your family this summer, we hope that it is a safe and fun journey and hopefully we have inspired you to find a great new destination.

The Virginia Beach boardwalk is filled with things to do, including rides and attractions in various settings. What you choose to do is really up to you. However, whatever you do and wherever you go, you can be assured that the next activity is always within a few feet. You will also take note that virtually every attraction has a bond with the ocean, which serves as a constant reminder of your surroundings.

The top 10 Virginia Beach boardwalk attractions include:

1. Virginia Beach Amusement Park – While this park may not be lavish and filled with thrill-seeking rides, it is quite nice and more like a carnival. It is also close to many of the Virginia Beach boardwalk hotels. You can actually walk right out of your room and within a few minutes, arrive at your destination.

2. Virginia Beach Fishing Pier – Perfect for those who are looking for things to do in Virginia Beach for the entire day. For just a small fee, you can bring your pole and collapsible chair and fish right off the pier all day.

3. Beach Street USA – The Virginia Beach boardwalk is always filled with live entertainment, including fireworks and festivals, especially during the summer. Jugglers, puppets and even magicians can be found along this route, called Beach Street.

4. Old Coast Guard Station – This is one of the top Virginia Beach attractions simply because of the age and condition of the building. It is a landmark in this area because of the long history. There are more than 3,000 photographs and artifacts located in this museum.

5. Naval Aviation Monument – Since the Virginia Beach boardwalk holds so much history, a stop at this monument, shows the significance of Virginia Beach and the importance of its existence during the 1900s for the US armed forces, including the Coast Guard, Marine Corps and the Navy.

6. Norwegian Lady – This statue, with her eyes leading toward the sea is a most beloved landmark in Virginia Beach. It commemorates the lives of the sailors, both lost and found during 1891, when the Dictator sank to the bottom.

7. King Neptune Statue – Located on the boardwalk, next to one of the oceanfront hotels in Virginia Beach, the Hilton, this statue represents all that remains hidden under the sea. It is a place where people come to reflect upon the strength and uncertainty of the ocean itself.

8. Virginia Legends Walk – This is a landscaped area that honors present and past Virginians who made major and significant national contributions. They include George Washington, Booker T. Washington, Woodrow Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Arthur Ashe, just to name a few.

9. Rockfish Restaurant – An evening of fine dining is waiting for you at the Rockfish, where you can enjoy your choice of the freshest seafood in the entire area. The crab cakes, tuna and cocktails are sublime.

10. Holiday Lights – If you are lucky enough to visit Virginia Beach during the holiday season, usually between November and January, you will want to make sure you spend a few hours just enjoying all of the holiday lights. They encompass the entire stretch of the boardwalk.

Ocean Views Hotels in Virginia Beach | "Travel medical insurance can be good bargain"

When Massillon resident Joanne Friedrich fell and broke her hip during a visit to the Bahamas this month, she experienced what might be every traveler’s worst nightmare: suffering a serious illness or injury far from home.

Getting airlifted back home after such an experience can cost as much as $100,000, according to the U.S. State Department.

Ocean Views Hotels in Virginia Beach
But Friedrich, who had purchased a relatively inexpensive membership in an air-evacuation program designed for travelers, was back in Massillon within several hours of her fall, with no out-of-pocket expense.

Being treated for an illness or accident in a foreign country can also be an expensive proposition. According to the State Department, private health insurance is generally not accepted outside the United States.

Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid don’t provide coverage abroad, either. And many medical providers require a payment from foreign visitors before treatment.

But travel medical insurance and medical evacuation policies can eliminate that risk relatively cheaply, said Damian Tysdal, founder of the website TravelInsuranceReview.net.

Insurance that adds medical coverage comes in two basic varieties, Tysdal explained: trip insurance — also called a “vacation plan” or “package plan” — and stand-alone travel medical insurance policies.

Trip insurance usually includes coverage for canceled or interrupted trips and lost baggage as well as for medical emergencies. But the coverage can routinely add 5 to 8 percent to the cost of a trip, Tysdal said.

Travel medical insurance alone is much cheaper, he said.

“A frequent traveler might not have the concerns about cancellations but be worried about going abroad and having a slip and fall and not having proper health coverage,” he said.

“You can get a travel medical plan for dollars a day. For example, on a recent two-week trip abroad, I paid $40 for a policy for my wife and me. That’s very cost-effective.”

The Insurance Information Institute trade group suggests that travel medical insurance can be a good deal for Americans venturing abroad, but it recommends checking with your own health insurance company before buying a policy to determine what coverage you might already have.

The cost of travel medical insurance varies depending on a number of factors, including the duration of the trip, the deductible and the coverage limits, said Chris Baker, regional insurance manager for AAA Ohio Auto Club.

“And the younger you are, the less expensive it is,” Baker said. “But it’s usually very affordable in any case.”

Dozens of insurance companies offer travel medical coverage. A typical policy might cover up to $100,000 in medical expenses after a $100 deductible and cost $30 to $50 a week for a 50-year-old man traveling to Europe.

Travel medical plans also include a kind of concierge service that offers 24-hour assistance by phone to help policyholders find appropriate treatment wherever they are in the world, Baker said. That can be very important for an ill traveler who might not even know the language, much less the ins and outs of the local health-care system, he said.

And although the quality and availability of medical care varies greatly throughout the world, the cost of travel medical insurance usually doesn’t depend on the destination, Baker said.

Most policies also include some coverage for emergency transportation to an appropriate medical facility. But getting emergency transportation back home can still be expensive, especially if medical attention is required on the way.

Some travelers should consider signing up for a medical emergency air-transport “membership” with one of several companies that offer the service, Tysdal said.

“That can be very cost-effective as well, especially if you do a decent amount of traveling,” he said.

One such service, MedjetAssist, will fly members to the hospital of their choice should they become ill or injured more than 150 miles from home. The service includes medical attendants for the flight and costs nothing beyond the membership fee, said Medjet CEO Roy Berger.

About 75 percent of such flights are made aboard private air ambulances, Berger said. The rest are aboard commercial flights in premium seats with medical attendants along.

Most of Medjet’s customers opt for annual memberships, which begin at $260 for an individual and $395 for a family, Berger said.

But short-term memberships are also available from $99 and are a popular choice for parents who are concerned about children traveling on spring break and the like.

“Everybody knows somebody who’s had an incident traveling,” Berger said.

“You think it won’t happen to you, and it probably won’t. But we’re selling peace of mind.”

No one has to sell Friedrich, who has owned her Bahamian condo for 39 years and been a Medjet member for 15 years.

After she fell in her condo, where she spends two to three months each year, she was airlifted that day from the local hospital to Affinity Medical Center near her Massillon home.

“They sent me on a Lear jet with two pilots and two medical people,” she said.

“It only took two hours and 15 minutes for the flight.”

She and her husband originally bought the Medjet policy on the advice of a Bahamian doctor, she said.

“It sounded like an excellent idea, and it was so reasonable that we signed up. We traveled a lot. And they’ll pick you up anyplace in the world and transfer you to the hospital closest to your home, if you want.”

After arriving at her home hospital, Friedrich underwent a hip replacement and is now recovering with a good prognosis, she said by phone from her hospital bed.

This is the second time Friedrich has used her Medjet membership. She was also flown back home after breaking a bone in 2009.
